General Assembly 2007

This year's General Assembly is scheduled to take place from 21 to 25 May. Most of the proceedings are open to the general public but there may be some occasions when meetings will be held in private to discuss sensitive issues.

Listed below are some of the events which we hope will be of particular interest. Unless otherwise stated these events take place at St Columba's Free Church.

Youth Night – 7pm Tuesday 22 May

In addition to the report from the Convenor of the Youth Committee (beginning at 6pm) and presentations to the Lyle Orr prize winners, a DVD will be played showing the variety of Youth Work currently going on throughout our church.

Susan MacLean (Skye & Wester Ross Presbytery Youth Facilitator) will give a presentation on her work and there will be an opportunity to meet some of our other Youth Workers.

Afterwards there will be tea and coffee in the hall downstairs where there will be a selection of Youth Work resources on show which will be available to order.

You are warmly invited to come along if you are free and are interested in the youth work of our church.

Praise Group – 7.30pm Wednesday 23 May

This year's General Assembly will break with tradition when there will be an extended time of psalm singing led by the St Columba's Praise Group.

It is hoped that many members of the public will make a special effort to join the commissioners in this happy occasion.

The evening session will begin with devotions at 6.30pm, to be followed by the debate on the Report of the Psalmody Committee.

Visit of the Lord High Commissioner – 11.45am Thursday 24 May

Each year the General Assembly is visited by the Lord High Comissioner - the Queen’s representative in Scotland. He brings us a message from Her Majesty, and the Assembly assures the Queen of the loyal and dutiful support of the church.

This year, we look forward to welcoming Prince Andrew as the LHC.

WFM Annual Meeting – 2.30pm Thursday 24 May

All ladies are warmly invited to attend the WFM Annual Meeting in the Presbytery Hall, 15 North Bank Street, The Mound.

The programme will include missionary speakers, an update on this year’s Project and information on the Project for next year.

A crèche will be provided for younger children and tea will be served following the event upstairs in the Chalmers Hall.

International Missions Night – 7.30pm Thursday 24 May

Following the Report of the International Missions Board (beginning at 6.30pm) the following missionaries will be asked to address the Assembly:

Rev Ronald Christie (South Africa), Rev Donnie Smith (Peru), Mike Moore (Christian Witness to Israel) and Marsali Campbell (Africa Inland Mission).

New workers preparing to go out to the Mission field will also be introduced to the Moderator.
