Sing Scripture

New Scripture Songs and Paraphrases in Metre produced by the Church’s Special Committee on Praise contains 34 Scripture songs from the Old and New Testaments. 

The Committee has collected and edited 32 newly produced metrical versions of passages of Scripture from within the resources of the Free Church. Every effort has been made to produce versions which accurately convey the meaning of the original within the constraints of metre and rhyme. Metres already in use within the Free Church have been used.

Many of the passages appear among the Scottish Paraphrases, but these songs are entirely new versions, apart from 1 Peter 1:3-9 and 1 John 3:1-3 which are substantial revisions of Paraphrases 61 and 63 respectively. Two songs by Dr Nick Needham have also been included, one in altered metre, and we are grateful for his permission to use these. The recommended tunes are found in Sing Psalms, The Scottish Psalmody (both published by the Free Church of Scotland) and Praise! (Praise Trust).
