12 new deacons for Back
June 20, 2012
Twelve new deacons will be ordained to a congregation on the Isle of Lewis this weekend.
Back Free Church, one of the denomination’s biggest congregations, will admit the men to office during the 12 noon service this Sunday (24 June).

Minister Reverend Calum Iain Macleod (pictured above)said: “There are nine deacons at present (25 including elders) so it’s a considerable but necessary jump to 21.
“It’s most encouraging to welcome these 12 gifted and resourceful men to serve on our Deacons’ Court.
“This addition will make a significant difference, making us better equipped and more resourced as a congregation to serve the Lord in the local community.”
A meeting will take place the following Wednesday (27 June) to welcome the new deacons and to introduce them to the business of the Court.
The Deacons’ Court is currently drawing up plans to extensively refurbish the entire church building complex at Back.
This includes redeveloping the main church, fitting a large kitchen in the church hall and upgrading the crèche facilities. It is hoped that this work will commence in October of this year.
The church hall, which opened in 2009, is now in constant use with activities and events running almost every night of the week on.
Activities include Christianity Explored, two youth clubs, YF, community group meetings as well as prayer meetings.
The congregation was also recently gifted a smartboard for the church hall.
The new technology has been of tremendous benefit to the children’s church and youth clubs as well as making the children’s talk on Sunday morning more visual, interactive and engaging.
